<img

Those of you who have tried Kindle models with special offers know too well how Amazon run ads on those devices. The company now seems to be toying with the idea of selling ads on the welcome screen of the Kindle Fire. It is not going to be cheap by any means as Amazon is looking to charge 0k or so for this privilege. That money would get advertisers a two month run time, covering both the front-page and Amazon’s Special Offers inventory.

It will be interesting to see whether there will be too many advertising agencies interested in such an offer. Amazon does have a new Kindle Fire in the works. But it is not clear whether that will get these front-page ads as well. Not everyone is excited about the idea though:

It’s kind of an expensive buy to not get a guaranteed audience and measurement … It doesn’t comply with a lot of our necessary planning rigor,

one agency executive explained. It will be interesting to see how Amazon approaches this. Will the company offer its customers even more discount to run more ads? That remains to be seen.

Kobo has just landed a deal for the seven new Harry Potter eBooks. Kobo customers across the globe will have access to them in many different languages such as; English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish to begin with, and more languages on the way.

The eBooks themselves are not available for purchase with Kobo but instead you are redirected to the Pottermore website. Once you buy the books you can link your Kobo account to the purchase and then easily transfer them to your Kobo e-Reader or many of the Kobo apps on iOS or Android.

This new arrangement with Kobo is of a similar vein to the established relationship that Pottermore has with Barnes and Noble, Amazon, Sony and Google. All of these vendors do not physically sell the digital content but instead send you the main Pottermore website. This really marks the first time an author has a copious amount of control that major companies are bending over backwards and making their customers visit a 3rd party website to purchase these books.

The entire Harry Potter eBook series is doing tremendously well with a recent report citing that Pottermore raked in over five million dollars in sales in their very first month. The deal with Kobo is a solid one because they have their hands in more markets then most of their competition. This allows many users in Canada, Australia and Europe to easily read the books.

Michael Tamblyn, Executive Vice President Content, Sales & Merchandising, Kobo, commented: “We’re excited to bring together the extremely successful Harry Potter phenomenon and the always-enthusiastic Kobo eReading community. Fans have been waiting for years to see the Harry Potter series in digital and now that wait is over.”

In other Kobo news, their parent company Rakuten invested over 100 million dollars in Pinterest. The two companies will be working out an arrangement to get photo sharing on the Kobo Vox and integration into their other apps. Also, be sure to check out the official Kobo Blog where they talk about our website and our review of their new Kobo Instant Reader.

Amazon has already released a color-screen e-reader to the market. But that just happens to have a LCD screen. The company was supposed to adopt color e-paper a while ago. It may be ready to do so this year. According to DigiTimes, Amazon could make that move as early as the second half of 2012. It has taken the color e-paper technology a lot of time to catch up though.

E-ink did show its latest color screen at the IFA conference last year. Triton displays are low energy displays capable of displaying 4096 colors. At the time, it did seem the technology needed some work to be ready for prime time. But we have already seen devices such as the JetBook Color that use it.

Amazon has decided to wait before the technology is 100% ready before rolling out color-screen E-ink Kindles. That could very well be later this year. The bad news is we have been hearing these rumors for a couple of years now.

Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she’s a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette.

John Wiley and Sons, publishers of the widely popular bestselling For Dummies series of titles, have been doing battle of late over piracy of its ebooks. As recently as last month, Wiley estimated that more than 74,000 of one of its popular titles alone had been illegally downloaded. In April, the publisher filed a lawsuit against 200 people based on the IP addresses after a deal was offered to all of the identified downloaders.

Now, Wiley is asking for personal information on Verizon customers in order to move forward with lawsuits against users who have illegal copies of ebooks, a request that Verizon has so far denied. The service provider has cited concerns over invasion of privacy and how the information could be used in other ways.

For its part, Verizon simply remains unconvinced that an IP address is an automatic guarantee that the actions were committed by the address owner. That’s not a far-fetched concern, as the registered user may not be the same person who engaged in illegal downloading. Other internet service providers, however, have caved to the pressure of the subpoenas and provided the requested information on their clients.

In April’s lawsuits. Wiley was only demanding the minimum punitive damages from the people whose IPs they recovered, typically 0. However, for those consumers who had been identified as infringing but refused to cooperate, the fine was as much as 0,000 per instance.<br

Datawind, makers of the ultra cheap UbiSlate 7+ tablet devices has just announced the winner of the App contest ‘AapKiApp.’ The contest involved the student community in India and was conceived to test their innovative abilities in developing suitable software application for the Aakash II tablet device. Of course the advantages are manifold as not only eould such an exercise allow the student community — the tablet’s intended clientele — to be more familiar with the device but will also bring to fore any flaws that the device might have. Also, the app contest will allow the students to explore more applications of the UbiSlate to not only among students but the general populace as well.

That the contest did help achieve the desired result can be made out in the words of Datawind CEO Suneet Singh Tuli who said while announcing the results of the contest, “We have received a lot of great entries with very creative ideas from across the country. We wanted to engage the creative energy of India’s brightest minds and give them an opportunity to think outside the box to create solutions that add value to the life of an average Indian. The best five applications will get an award of Rs. 1 lakh each, apart from getting a share of the advertising revenue from these applications. This would allow these students to start and advance their entrepreneurial journeys.”

The top 5 apps (INPO) that have been declared winner are:

My Jobs: Created by Hemen Parekh from Mumbai, the app, as it name should imply, allows the user to search and apply online for jobs that have been drawn from a database of all vocational jobs available in the country.

Learn English: Created by Rajiv Kaul from Chandigarh, the app allows kids to pick up the nuances of the language English using finger tracking techniques with an intelligent voice guidance system to ensure the kids are picking up the right skills.

Axon is a quiz based app for students. The app will ask questions on mathematics, logic and verbal reasoning and will test the student’s ability with different levels of difficulty built into it. The Axon has been the handiwork of Nagpur based Saurabh, Sujay Anjankar, Tanya Tiwari and Umesh Chandani.

Release my Food is another interesting app and as the name signifies, it is about the food one eats and the nutritional value and calories it contains. The app will let users to have an idea of the calories and nutritional values one has gained from the food they have eaten. The app is based on the criteria laid down by the Indian Council of Medical Research’s (ICMR) for daily allowances required by people based on their gender and age. The app has been developed by Kedar Radhakrishnan, Avin Agarwal, Abijeet Waghmare and Najmul Islam from Bangalore.

Another nice app that has made it to the top 5 and which could open up the UbiSlate 7+ tablet’s application is Krishi Ville. Designed by Manav Singhal and Nishant Rai from Meerut, the app is aimed at the Indian farmers who will be provided with all important information pertaining to farming. The data sourced from the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) database will include such agricultural information like prices of grains, pulses, seeds and other commodities in the local markets, latest weather updates or any other news from the agriculture sector that could be of benefit to the farmers.

class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5660" title="" src="http://www.bestebookreaders.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/1.png" alt="" width="295" height="227" />

In the past few months, we have heard a lot about Apple’s plans to release a smaller iPad to the market. A 7 inch iPad could put pressure on Samsung, Amazon, and B&N. What we don’t hear a lot about are over 11 inch tablets. As someone who still considers Kindle DX the best e-reader around, I would like to see larger screen tablets make their way to the market. Toshiba is planning to release such a tablet in Toshiba Excite 13:

The Excite 13 is what we see as a home tablet … The larger size makes it an ideal kitchen tablet. You can watch how-to videos while you’re cooking, or look up recipes. And then later, you can bring it into the living room to watch videos with the kids, or to look at family photos with friends.

Jared Leavitt, a Toshiba spokesman, told Wired.com. The Toshiba Excite 13 has a 13.3 inch screen and will run Android 4.0. It will have a quad core processor inside. The device is pretty thin and will weigh only 2.2 lbs.

Not everyone is sold on the idea behind these large tablets though. Many experts consider this tablet to be too huge. Jared Spool, the CEO of User Interface Engineering, a usability research firm, does not believe this tablet will be successful:

what this comes down to is that it’s not the specific technology in a tablet that makes it exciting. It’s the user experience. And there’s just a lot less to do on an Android tablet than an iPad. And what there is to do is much clumsier because the screen sizes and specs for Android tablets are all over the place. A 13-inch screen and a bunch of top specs do nothing to change that.

The Toshiba Excite 13 may not become an iPad killer. It is too huge to pull it off anyway. But there is no reason 11.6 or 12.1 inch tablets can’t be popular. We would love for Apple to release larger iPads. But that does not seem likely at this point.

Your turn: would you like to see Apple release larger iPads? Is Toshiba Excite 13′s screen too large?
