29% of Kindle Fire Owners Plan to Spend More, Only 54% Satisfied?

Amazon is losing money for every Kindle Fire sold for a very good reason. The company is hoping to get it back with content sales. A recent study conducted by research firm ChangeWave suggests that 29% of Kindle Fire owners plan to spend more money on Amazon.com. That number is only at 19% for non-Kindle Fire owners. This does suggest that Amazon’s strategy in the e-reader business is quite viable.

Amazon is in desperate need of good news for investors at this point. While the company is selling a ton of Kindle Fires, its net income and profit margins are quite alarming to the investor community. The study does suggest that Amazon needs to work harder to make Kindle Fire owners satisfied. Only 54 percent of Kindle Fire owners in this research said that they were very satisfied with their tablet.

Amazon has a great opportunity to solidify its position in the tablet market by making some improvements to the current Kindle hardware. Adding volume buttons and a basic camera could go a long way towards keeping Kindle Fire fans happy. But can Amazon keep the prices down? We will have to wait and see .

Finalists for the 21st Annual Discover Great New Writers Awards Announced

The six finalists for its 2011 Discover Great New Writers Awards were announced today by Barnes & Noble. The winners in each category, fiction and nonfiction, receive a ,000 prize and a full year of additional promotion from Barnes & Noble. Second-place finalists receive ,000, and third-place finalists, ,500. The finalists are:

Fiction:

Alice LaPlante, Turn of Mind (Atlantic Monthly Press)
Scott O’Connor, Untouchable (Tyrus Books, a division of F+W Media, Inc.)

Nonfiction:

Winners will be announced on March 7 at a private awards ceremony. The Discover Awards honor the best works featured the previous calendar year in the Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers program.

The Jurists

Two panels of distinguished literary judges selected the finalists and will select the winners. Serving as this year’s fiction judges are: Chris Abani, author of the 2004 Discover selection GraceLand and, most recently, the poetry collection, Sanctificum; Lauren Belfer, author of A Fierce Radiance and the 1999 Discover selection City of Light; and Bo Caldwell, author of the national bestsellers City of Tranquil Light and The Distant Land of My Father.

This year’s nonfiction judges are: Marie Arana, author of two novels, Cellophane and Lima Nights, and a memoir, American Chica, a 2002 Discover Great New Writers selection; John Freeman, former president of the National Book Critics circle and author of The Tyranny of E-Mail, a 2009 Discover selection; and Koren Zailckas, author of Fury and the 2005 Discover selection Smashed.

The Discover Awards

The Discover Great New Writers program was established in 1990 to highlight works of exceptional literary quality that might otherwise be overlooked in a crowded book marketplace. This year’s selections featured the work of 68 new and previously underappreciated writers. Submissions to the program are read and discussed by a group of Barnes & Noble booksellers before selection for the program’s seasonal promotions.

Past winners of the annual Discover Great New Writers Award include Kim Echlin for The Disappeared and David R. We are proud to unleash the beta version of our standalone Android App Store client! This is an extension of our browser based store that we unveiled last month. It brings to the table exciting new features and a very clean interface.

The Good e-Reader Android App Store has been a huge success for us with over 50,000 visitors on the website since it launched in the second week of Janurary. The premise of the store is to give people outside of the USA a chance to get their hands on the latest apps! We have apps that Getjar and other alterantive markets simply don’t have and we put a strong emphasis on reading programs. B&N will not sell books published by Amazon

Don’t look for any fence mending to take place anytime soon between the two largest competitors in the digital reading space in the US. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Barnes & Noble will no longer sell any books published by Amazon’s publishing imprints in its stores. B&N is irate about Amazon’s growing list of exclusive ebook publishing deals.

To be sure there are a few books that are available in digital format from B&N but not from Amazon, but these are few and far between and the number of exclusives at the Kindle Store vastly outweighs those available at the Nook Store.

Meanwhile, Amazon’s stock price is taking a hit today after the company reported lower than expected revenue for the last quarter, although the company’s profit was higher than expected.

Here is Why Notion Ink Choose TI OMAP Over Tegra 3 For Adam II

Notion Ink has recently announced a successor to its Adam tablet device which is being called the Adam II. However, unlike its ancestor, Adam II is making far less noise and that’s hardly surprising. This since the Adam has failed to live up to the kind of hype that it had generated during the time of its launch. However, the upcoming Adam is still in news which can be attributed to NI’s choice of processor for the new tablet — the TI OMAP SoC processor that has raised many an eyebrows.

The normal choice should have been the Tegra 3 quad core chip and that was what had also been announced initially. The switch to TI OMAP therefore has been a reason for intrigue to many people out there. Notion Ink though explained the swap claiming the actual usage of power of the processor is more optimal in case of the TI OMAP rather than the Tegra 3 chip. They further clarified that even though Tegra 3 has a better GPU or the OMAP have more memory than Tegra 3, these issues have a lower precedence than the actual usage of available resources.

Where TI OMAP beats Tegra 3 chip is the plethora of documents, use-case models, white papers that are available on it. These in tun makes it easier to draw out the most from the capabilities of the TI OMAP chip. For firms that do not have the ability to carry out its own R&D, relying on such documents and case models could be the only way out. Another great reason to opt for the TI chip is that those who developed the TI OMAP are placed in Bangalore, which is where Notion Ink is also located.

Further, the fabrication of the TI OMAP chip is based on the 28 nm process while that of the Tegra 3 is based on the 40 nm process. The advantage of this for TI OMAP is that the process is cheaper as also less taxing on the power consumption aspect. Battery life of the devices based on TI OMAP would naturally be more than those based on the Tegra 3 chip.

Surely most of the reason mentioned above are purely technical in nature and hence well beyond the scope of the average tablet buyers. For them, what matters most is a device that is well put together, has decent battery life and has the performance to boast of. Let’s just hope the Adam II delivers on these aspects.

How To Delete An App From Kindle Fire

If there’s one question we get time and time again, it’s “How do I delete an app from my Kindle Fire?” Well, this is how.

There are a couple of options. You can remove an app from your Kindle Fire device, or you can delete it from your Amazon.com account. Apps removed from your Kindle Fire device are stored in Your Apps and can be downloaded again from your Cloud Library. If you delete an app from your account, however, you’ll have to purchase the app again to re-install it on your Kindle Fire.

So to remove an app from your Kindle Fire device, tap Apps from the Kindle Fire Home screen and then tap Device. Press and hold the app you’d like to remove and tap Remove from Device. Note: Certain apps are factory installed on Kindle Fire and can’t be uninstalled like Facebook, for example. (Personally, we’re not fans of this.)

To permanently remove an app from your Amazon.com account, visit Your Apps from a web browser. Select “Delete this app” from the “Actions…” drop down menu to the right of the app. Then remove the app from the Kindle Fire Apps Library Device tab. Again, just remember that if you delete it here, you’ll have to buy it again if you want to re-install it on your Kindle Fire.

Investors Disappointed by Amazon Sales?

Amazon had a quite successful year in 2011. It brought the Kindle Fire to the market and sold millions of these e-readers in the last month. In fact, studies have shown that Amazon Kindle Fire may already be on its way to becoming the #2 tablet right behind the iPad. But Amazon has been losing a ton of money to get here. It is no secret that Amazon loses money each time a new Kindle Fire is bought. That partially explains why the company’s shares have started falling as the company has missed sales estimates yet again. id="more-5190">

Amazon earned .4 billion in revenue in the 4th quarter of 2011 (missing the .3m estimate). But net income fell by 57%. Investors are particularly disappointed that Amazon got less revenue from digital media than anticipated. The fact that Amazon is not as profitable as some were hoping can be explained by the company’s push to squeeze margins to grow. But the sales slowdown is not a good sign for Amazon.

Amazon has put a lot of pressure on other players in the tablet market by offering the Kindle Fire for such a low price. The company is really pushing it with its pricing strategies. So its expenses are expected to remain high for the time being. Will investors stay patient? We will have to wait and see.

The Good e-Reader Android App Store was first unveiled a few weeks ago when we rolled out our web version tailored to e-readers and tablets. Since then we have amassed a collection of almost 200 apps that are basically our top picks of the very best. We are diligently working on an actual Android App that will be your portal to downloading apps directly to your Kobo Vox, Kindle Fire, Pandigital Novel or many other devices. This app will feature all of our existing apps and soon our free app of the week. Once you install an app from our store and we upload a new version you will be prompted to upgrade your existing one.

Audiobooks come to a cloud near you

Audiobooks.com announced today the launch of a cloud-based audiobook subscription service. For .95 per month you get unlimited access to over 10,000 audiobooks that can be listened to on any PC, iOS or Android device that is connected to the Internet. Support for Blackberry and Windows Mobile is said to be on the way.

I subscribe to Audible.com, which offers over 100,000 titles and costs .95 per month for one credit (most of the audiobooks cost one credit). With Audible you own the audiobooks you purchase with your credits (you can also purchase additional titles and Audible has frequent sales). Your library at Audible will remain accessible to you even if you cancel your membership. Audible’s titles are downloaded to an authorized device and can be played on that device anywhere, anytime.

For me Audible works best as I listen to audiobooks while I’m driving, but if one listens from a device that always has an Internet connection and especially if one goes through multiple audiobooks per month, Audiobooks.com’s cloud-based service might be worth looking at.
